Since the novel is told from a First Person PoV, it’s important that the main character is easy to get behind. The mystery is introduced immediately, and it’s easy to share Benson’s sense of bewilderment at the crazy circumstances of the school. This is important in any novel, in in a YA novel especially. Wells grabs your attention right from the beginning. What is really going on here? That is what Benson tries to discover, and it is what makes this novel so incredibly fun to read. The real story here is the mystery behind Maxfield Academy. They are split up into three gangs, each of which try to recruit Benson. Just students who can’t even really recall how long they’ve been there. Within the first few opening pages of the novel, Benson is dropped off at the front gate.īy the time Benson even has an inkling as to what is going on, it’s far too late to leave. He’s given a chance to go to a super exclusive private school, Maxfield Academy. The novel follows Benson Fisher, a perpetual foster care kid. Let’s start with a brief little synopsis of VARIANT. That brings us to Robison Wells and his first major novel, VARIANT ( Amazon). If we had to point at one area where our appreciation has grown significantly, it would be with YA novels. Out of necessity–and due to our unwavering commitment to be being completely awesome–we read a pretty much everything that is sent to us. Ever since we started this lovely little blog we’ve found our horizons broadened.

I relax in Carter’s bed for a few more minutes, thinking about him, then I drag myself out of the bed and wander around. Since he went to Erika’s when we were on the brink of a relationship, it’s probably unreasonable to imagine he hasn’t slept with anyone now that he’s completely single again. My heart aches at the thought, even though I know he can now and he wouldn’t be doing anything wrong. God, I hope he hasn’t brought anyone else in this bed since me. I close my eyes and breathe it in, memories stirring of his arms around me. Since he isn’t here to witness it, I climb onto his unmade bed and crawl under the covers, pulling them up around me. I shouldn’t be in here when he isn’t home, when he hasn’t invited me, but as I look at his bed, I can’t help thinking about when I slept here with him and missing it. It shouldn’t be so easy to penetrate his sanctuary, when in so many ways, he is so well-guarded. I don’t know why I imagined he might have his bedroom door locked, but I’m surprised when it easily unlatches and drifts open. His door is closed, but my hand finds its way to the knob and it twists easily. I intend to go directly downstairs so I can start studying, but I can’t help a faint stirring of curiosity when I go to walk past Carter’s bedroom. “Good night, Chloe.” I pause to turn out her light, steal one last glance at her and her nightstand to make sure she has her water bottle, then I pull the door shut behind me. If you need anything, I’ll be downstairs in the living room until someone gets home.” “Okay.” I smile and lean down, kissing her little forehead. The whole notion of nagging and begging your mom for a little sister really resonated with me. I was incredibly pumped to see what my little sister would think about this read, since it's the perfect visual example of what I felt like during those years before her birth. Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado. I initially picked it up for my little sister, but ended up enjoying it myself in one sitting just before she came home from school. Also, shoutout to my local library for holding a copy of this graphic novel. My third read, Sisters, in particular resonated with me because of the main notion of sisterhood and its complications/ joys. Telgemeier's books just keep getting better and better in my eyes. My heart broke reading about the changes that took place in the town as she grew up - strips of condominiums and expensive homes replacing pear trees and the dark green of the mountains. Her descriptions of the town that she lived in as a child (somewhere around San Francisco) were so lush. The book is more of an exploration of characters, of snippets of memories of these characters' lives.īy the third chapter, I was hooked. I wasn't immediately pulled into the story. Second, I thought I had prematurely declared my love for Anne Lamott after having only read Bird by Bird and watched her speak in a bunch of YouTube videos.
